Course details


The first day:

Review of Bone Function

Discuss the difference between cortical and cancellous bone, Discuss the micro (lamellar vs. woven bone), and macro structure of bone, discuss the vascular supply to bone, and to discuss the unique characteristics of bone.

Review of Bone Healing 

Discuss the goals of bone healing, Discuss the biologic and mechanical factors involved with bone healing, Discuss the phases of  bone healing (inflammatory, repair, maturation), Discuss secondary bone healing, Discuss primary bone healing (direct vs. gap).


The second day :

Bone Plates and Screws for Small/Toy Breeds and Cats

Discuss bone screws (cortical vs cancellous, locking vs nonlocking, unique purpose screws), Discuss biomechanics and application of bone screws, Discuss bone plate applications (neutralization, buttress, compression), Discuss different plate types (DCP, LCP, locking).

Distal Radial Fractures in Small/Toy Breed Dogs and Cats)

Discuss direct open anatomic reconstruction of distal radiaus/ulna fractures, discuss the anatomical considerations specific to toy/small breed dogs and cats, review the surgical apporach to the distal radius/ulna, Discuss the surgical procedure with tips on completing a successful repair of distal radius/ulna fractures, Discuss potential complications with distal radius/ulna fractures.


The third day :

Repair of distal Radius/Ulna fractures (short oblique with locking plate application) using both plastic bone models and cadavers

Understand locking plate technology and application with instruments on plastic bone models, Understand the surgical apporach with an emphasis on minimal tissue trauma on the cadaver, Successful repair of a short oblique distal radial/ulnar fracture of the cadaver using locking plate technology.

 Tibial Fractures in Small/Toy Breeds and Cats 

Discuss direct open anatomic reconstruction of tibial fractures, discuss the anatomical considerations specific to toy/small breed dogs and cats, review the surgical apporach to the tibia, Discuss the surgical procedure with tips on completing a successful repair of tibial fractures, Discuss potential complications with tibial fractures.


The fourth day:

Comminuted Tibial Fracture (Plate/rod combo)

Understand plate/rod application with instruments on plastic bone models, Understand the surgical apporach with an emphasis on minimal tissue trauma on the cadaver, Successful repair of a comminuted tibial fracture of the cadaver using plate/rod technology.
