Course Description

This Masters Course is designed for the practicing veterinarian having prior experience with application of bone plates and fracture repair.

Arthrodesis is a common procedure used to treat joints having severe osteoarthritis, instability or pain that cannot be resolved by primary repair. Arthrodesis of the shoulder, carpus and tarsus can be performed with a very good outcome. Patients are expected to return to a high level of function, including running and jumping. The outcome following arthrodesis of all joints is much improved now due to recent advantages in technology and surgical technique. Locking plate systems simplify the process and have much fewer complications. The course will detail decision-making, surgical principles, surgical planning, application in simulated bone and cadaver bone, postoperative care, management of complications, and long-term outcome. Arthrodesis of the shoulder, carpus and tarsus will be discussed. Indications and techniques for complete and partial arthrodesis of the carpus and tarsus will also be addressed. Arthrodesis techniques will be shown for large breed dogs, small breed dogs and cats. Participants will also learn about options to stimulate bone production at the site of arthrodesis, including techniques for autogenous bone graft harvest, bone substitutes, stem cells and growth factors. This course is appropriate for specialists, residents, interns and general practitioners with a special interest and prior training in veterinary orthopedics.
