Speaker Introduction

Dr. Pedro Bento was born and raised on the Southwest coast of Portugal. He obtained his DVM and Master’s degree in 2008 from Escola Universitaria Vasco da Gama (College of Veterinary Medicine) in Coimbra, Portugal. Following vet school, he spent a year in small animal private practice near Lisbon. He moved to the United States in 2010 to complete a rotating internship at Washington State University and stayed on as a Community Practice Clinician the following year. In 2012, he moved to New York to complete a Small Animal Internal Medicine residency at Cornell University, and achieved board certification through the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2015. He then moved to the Midwest to be a faculty member at Michigan State University. Since leaving academia, he has been working in private practice in NY and MA. Although Pedro enjoys all aspects of Internal Medicine, he is particularly interested in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Hematology.

GI endoscopy:

In this 2-day long segment, attendees will first be exposed to the basics of gastrointestinal endoscopy so that more in-depth discussion of upper and lower GI endoscopy can ensue. We’ll start with instrumentation and handling of GI endoscopes. We’ll then move on to a detailed overview of indications and complications for each procedure, how to correctly perform GI endoscopy, patient safety, gastric foreign body removal and capsule endoscopy. Since one of the main objectives of endoscopy is to obtain good quality biopsy samples, this will be discussed, as well as interpretation of histopathology reports. Tips and tricks, and troubleshooting for each procedure will be discussed within each lecture.

Day 3

Tracheobronchoscopy

Cystoscopy

Rhinoscopy

Tracheobronchoscopy, Cystoscopy and Rhinoscopy:

In this full day segment, attendees will be exposed to the basics of tracheobronchoscopy, cystoscopy and rhinoscopy. Instrumentation, technique, indications and complications will be discussed. Tips and tricks, and troubleshooting for each procedure will be discussed within each lecture.

Day 4

Wet lab – GI endoscopy and bronchoscopy. Plus/minus FB removal

Demo of rhinoscopy and cystoscopy – we can talk about this, or simply not do it as we might run out of time.
